Welcome to this month’s edition of the College’s “Script & Scope”.
This month, the focus is specifically on our students and comes from our student services team. Having recently joined this amazing group of individuals, I am pleased to say that I am incredibly excited about the future of our programs and being able to work with this talented group of individuals.
As you will see, we take a variety of approaches to welcome our students and provide them support for their success. It has been a very energetic and enthusiastic beginning to our fall semester with the return to in-person class instruction. We are all excited to see how the academic year continues and to work with all of the students in our programs. Have a wonderful fall!
Faculty in the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions rolled out the welcome mat to students entering the professional programs. This includes the pharmacy, medical lab science, master of public health, and respiratory care students.
With its rich 130-year history, the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions is recognized for excellence in preparing students for the professional world of a pharmacist. Our graduates are highly sought-after by employers from across the country. The college’s Pharmacy Recruitment Days, held Oct. 13-14, are an excellent opportunity for employers and residency programs to connect with our talented students who are preparing for graduation, and for our new students to begin building relationships and networking in preparation for the future. Pharm.D. students in their P1, P2 and P4 year are eligible to attend Pharmacy Recruitment Days. A detailed schedule and information for employers can be found at Pharmacy Days 2021.
This year, the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions will provide both in person and virtual options to provide flexibility to employers who may still be restricting in-person interactions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as allow our P4 students who may be doing rotations across the country to participate from wherever they are. The ability to have meaningful conversations in person and the added flexibility of virtual meetings will allow all participants to maximize their ability to interact with everyone.
The event will begin Oct. 13 with our annual Employer/Faculty Social, where college faculty can interact with employers in attendance (many of whom are graduates of our very own Pharm.D. program). Following the social, P1, P2 and P4 students will be invited to attend the in-person career fair in the University Student Union’s Volstorff Ballroom. Students will have the ability to participate in interviews and residency showcases throughout Oct. 14, with the day concluding with a virtual career fair in the evening.
We invite pharmacist recruiters to register for this student recruitment event. Our college and our students greatly appreciate the opportunities to interact with potential employers. Thank you for all you do for our program and our students.
Walking the halls of a new school is a little less intimidating when you know your big brother (or sister) is walking them, too.
That is the concept behind the peer mentoring program for P1 students in the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. Established a number of years ago, the program pairs 10 P1 or P2 students with groups of three to five prepharmacy students enrolled in PHA 119—Intro to Pharmacy Profession. Mentors attend three or four lectures in that class, facilitate discussions and coordinate a service project.
“This is a great opportunity for Pharm.D. professional program students to learn the importance of leadership and service to others and it is crucial for prepharmacy students to connect outside the classroom,” said Asha Hertler, academic advising coordinator with the college.
The SDSU Health Professions Careers Camp is a four-day summer camp for high school students interested in a career that will give them the chance to help others in the world of health sciences.
Students explore a wide array of opportunities in the health care field and can interact with health care professionals and participate in a variety of hands-on activities both on campus and off campus. The camp is offered to high school students the summer after their junior year and allows students to explore possible careers in a variety of high-demand professions.

One Day for State Recap
To put it simply – One Day for State was a resounding success this year! Celebrating it’s fifth anniversary, ODFS saw donations from over 5,000 donors and nearly surpassed $2 million! This says so much about the University, the Colleges, students, staff, faculty and donors. It also reminds us that every gift matters, no matter the size.
For the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, the day was hugely successful as well. Our College, the smallest in terms of alumni, had the third highest number of donors (324) and raised more than $116,000! Congratulations to everyone involved in this effort. The graphic above shows many of the highlights from the day. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a remarkable day!
