Greetings from the Office of Experiential Education.
Thank you to all our preceptors who work with our students every year. Your contributions to their education are truly impactful on their growth and development into pharmacists.
In this issue you will find the 2022 graduates and their plans upon graduations. It is exciting to see where their paths have taken them.
Summer is a busy and exciting time for experiential learning, and we start a new Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) year and have students completing Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE). IPPEs for second- and third-year students are occurring throughout the summer. The impact of the link our preceptors provide for the IPPE students to help them translate the classroom experiences into practice of pharmacy at their sites is very rewarding to hear about from the students. For many students this may be their first time in a hospital or community pharmacy. Our APPE students are eager to start the final chapter of their pharmacy education.
New this year in APPEs, the required hospital APPE and the required community APPE have moved from satisfactory/unsatisfactory grades to letter grades. Preceptors for both APPEs were given the opportunity to attend a live or recorded session with the course coordinators for those APPEs to review the course requirements for the new year and answer any questions about the APPE or the new letter grading format.
We are happy to report that the first year of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) as the basis for our IPPE evaluations and most of our APPE evaluations went very well. The new EPA based evaluation tools provide a recommended grade. Between May and March of 2022, 291 APPE grades had been submitted and only 1% of all evaluations has a recommendation to change the letter grade from the one that the tool had suggested. We will continue to monitor and refine the tools as needed.
Congratulations to Dr. Laible and Dr. Tummala on their new positions within the college, Jessica Begeman on her Udall Undergraduate Scholarship, Dr. Tom Babb on his Preceptor of The Year award and Sarah Jungers who will complete her residency at the end of June.
Thank you to our preceptors and their staff who provide the best pharmacy practice experiences possible. You are a vital part of their education.
Jodi Heins, Pharm.D. Director of Experiential Education PGY1 Community-Based Residency Program Director Professor of Pharmacy Practice Office of Experiential Education College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions
Brad Laible, a professor of pharmacy practice and a member of SDSU's College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions since 2004, has been named the college’s associate dean for academic programs.
He's been serving as interim associate dean since Jan. 10, when Teresa Seefeldt was named SDSU’s vice provost for undergraduate education.
In the position, Laible will deal with student success strategies, curriculum design and academic program accreditation and assessment. He also will continue to teach classes for second- and third-year Pharm.D. students.
Dean Dan Hansen said, “Brad has a long track record of success in teaching, research and assigned professional and general service. Over the last few months, Brad has done a great job of serving in an interim role and I look forward to working with him as he transitions into the role full-time.”
Professor Hemachand Tummala has been named head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at South Dakota State University.
He has been serving as interim department head since Sept. 22 when professor Omathanu Perumal was chosen as the associate dean for research. A nationwide search was launched in the spring and
Dean Dan Hansen announced Tummala’s appointment June 23.
Hansen said, “Dr. Tummala has a strong track record as a researcher and has been recognized nationally for his innovative teaching strategies. I look forward to working with Dr. Tummala as he moves into this role permanently.”
SDSU student Jessica Begeman has been selected one of the 55 Udall Undergraduate Scholarship recipients. The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment.
Selected by a 20-member review committee, the recipients were chosen from 382 candidates nominated by 181 different colleges and universities.
Begeman, SDSU’s first Udall Scholar, just completed her first year in the professional Pharm.D. program in the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. An enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Begeman is from Martin and is also an Avera Wokini Scholar at SDSU.
As Sarah Jungers’ P4 year progressed and she was looking for a postgraduate residency, the Sibley, Iowa, native wasn’t sure where her professional interests would lead.
“When I was applying for residencies, I was trying to decide long-term where I could see my future. I really liked that this residency had a teaching component. I could get a teaching certificate and would have the opportunity to work with first through fourth year SDSU pharmacy students. The residency also offered clinic-based experiences including direct patient care and the ability to work closely with the providers. In addition, the residency offered patient care and management experiences at Lewis Drug. This residency had a variety of unique components. It offered a well-rounded experience that I could apply to many different career paths upon completion,” Jungers said.
As she completes the yearlong residency June 30, Jungers, a 2021 Pharm.D. graduate, found the Community Pharmacy Residency Program at SDSU provided exactly what it promised—lots of variety and lots of learning opportunities.
The college’s formal faculty mentoring program marks its anniversary in May and college administrators couldn’t be happier.
Beginning in May 2021, the 74 members of the Pharm.D. class of ’22 were paired with a pharmacy practice mentor. Breanna Brungardt (pictured above on the right) took a teaching elective under Dr. Brittney Meyer (pictured above on the left) between Nov. 1 and Dec. 7, 2021.
Brungardt was already thinking she wanted to become a pharmacy educator and the time spent with Meyer cemented that. During her five weeks, she helped P2 students prepare for exams, graded their papers on disease states and gave two presentations to prepharmacy students on professionalism and ethics.
For the fourth consecutive year, the respiratory care program at South Dakota State University has been honored for achieving 100% Registered Respiratory Therapist Credentialing Success. The President’s Award for Excellence in Credentialing Success is awarded by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. SDSU is one of a select few programs nationwide to earn the award.
Dr. Thomas Babb received the 2022 Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year award. This is one of the most prestigious awards given to a volunteer preceptor. It acknowledges an individual who has excelled at teaching, mentoring, and modeling exemplary patient care and pharmacy practice to the College's students.

Dr. Emily Van Klompenburg was selected as one of the nine nominees for the Embe Award recognizing Women in Healthcare/STEM. Dr. Van Klompenburg is an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy & Allied Health Professions.
Brooke Merry
Hello everyone! I’m Brooke Merry, and I’m incredibly excited to serve as the new Recruitment and Outreach Coordinator. While I am new to the role, I have worked at SDSU for the past 7 years in Housing and Residential Life as a Residence Hall Director.
In that role I was able to expand my knowledge in crisis management, training, recruitment and selection, and building residential curriculums. Fun fact: being an RHD did require me to live on campus.
My husband (Brock) and I live in Brookings with our two daughters- Clara (6) and Carlee (8 months), along with our two dogs (border collie & pappijack). We do help out with his family’s farm and have a passion for furniture upcycling & tractor restorations. We are thrilled to join the Pharmacy and Allied Health family & truly appreciate all the warm welcomes you’ve provided!
