Early detection is key: According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection includes doing monthly breast self-exams, and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.
Men do get breast cancer too: It is estimated 2,190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually, compared to 250,000 woman. Although this is a small percentage, men carry a higher mortality rate because they do not complete self-exams and they are less likely to assume a lump would be breast cancer, thus a delay in treatment.
