Faculty Spotlight: Chulwoo Pack

Pack and Students

Dr. Chulwoo Pack, who graduated from SDSU in 2017 with a master's in computer science, previously developed a computer-aided diagnosis system that generates data on mammogram images to support practitioners in the early detection of breast cancer. Expanding on this experience, he applied deep learning models to the domain of document images. He worked on segmenting and clustering historical newspapers and images for the Chronicling America repository. The Library of Congress asked Pack to come to Washington where he helped staff generate "enriched metadata" from the documents using computational image analysis tools and various deep learning models. The metadata could be used by researchers and historians to improve discoverability and searchability.

Now, as an assistant professor in SDSU's Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, Pack continues his research to develop image analysis tools through deep learning, computer vision and reasoning.

How can marching band members learn the band's formations and their own individual movements more easily?

This was the basic question that Grant Sternhagen, a junior in South Dakota State University's Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering, asked. The answer has led to a long-term development project that could allow marching band members to learn their spots and moves on a field by following along on their phones through an inexpensive app.

Team+s student Build
Team+s Student Multiple Choice testing

TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) is an annual science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) competition that challenges middle school and high school student teams to work collaboratively to solve real-world engineering challenges, applying their math and science knowledge in practical, creative ways.

The 2024 TEAMS competition took place between February 1 and March 1, 2024.  Teams of two to four students compete in person on competition day for state awards.

Jerome J Lohr College of Engineering, one of the host sights, held the Team+s competition on February 21. The student competition is a one-day event and includes the following three-parts:

  • Design/Build—Teams design and build a solution to an engineering challenge.
  • Multiple Choice—Teams use math and science skills to solve real-world engineering challenges.
  • Essay—Teams research and write an in-depth essay submitted electronically.
