REU Program
by: Addison DeHaven
A new cohort of eager student researchers have descended on South Dakota State University's campus for another session of the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.
Lecturer Bill Alsaker, Professor Xijin Ge and the students from Data Science Camp. The four-day camp attracted 18 high school students, mostly from eastern South Dakota, but there also was one student each from California, Arkansas and Missouri who discovered the camp through an online search. They learned R programming and Excel as well as how to write code with ChatGPT and how to analyze data using Excel. They then used those skills to create their own project, such as creating a game with the code written by ChatGPT. Classes were held in the computer lab at Solberg Hall, but students also toured McCrory Gardens, climbed the Campanile and went to the movies.
