Over the past several months, as I have prepared to renew my nurse anesthesia certification, the idea of professional identity keeps running through my head. Like many of you, I have enjoyed a long career in nursing — both as a clinician and as an educator. I am grateful for the ways this career has helped me to grow as a person. Truly, being a certified registered nurse anesthetist and an educator defines who I am and influences every facet of my life. Twenty years ago this fall, 13 nurses — a “Who’s Who” list of nursing intellects in the upper Midwest — gathered as a cohort to pursue a doctoral degree in nursing, the first to be offered in the Rushmore State.

The South Dakota State University College of Nursing is now accepting applicants for its new online Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
The program is designed to provide rural and place-bound students with the opportunity to pursue a nursing career while addressing the critical nursing shortages across South Dakota, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Heidi Mennenga said.
