Introducing SDState’s 7 Colleges and What Each is About

So you've decided to investigate South Dakota State University (SDState)... when it comes to selecting a degree program, a good place to start is the university's many colleges. Each has its strengths and opportunities, so it's important to weigh your options and interests and plot out a future career that makes sense for you.

Here's a breakdown of the seven SDState colleges and what each offers.

College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences

SDState's College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences is the largest on campus, and rightly so—it's home to the SDSU Extension, a research-based body that advocates for sustainable change in the worlds of agriculture and natural resources statewide. With a variety of departments and career paths in this SDState college—including agriculture production, agronomy and animal science—there's no shortage of opportunity for those with an interest in the environment.

College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

What exactly are the "humanities" and the "social sciences?" At SDState, they encompass the importance of studying our society as a whole and the cultures that impact it. From budding attorneys to future music educators to research specialists, it's one of the most diverse colleges on campus. Students in this college engage in a wide range of hands-on learning activities and a faculty of 130-plus to guide them through their degree program.

College of Education & Human Sciences

SDState is home to the only College of Education & Human Sciences in the state. With 16 major options and 19 minor paths, each degree program is paired with an internship or practicum to ensure you’re getting the most hands-on academic experience possible—better preparation for the real world and better employees for each industry. Plus, SDState's early childhood education program comes with a state-of-the-art lab school, ranked in the top 15 in the country, as well as the only accredited exercise science and nutrition & dietetics programs in the state.

College of Natural Sciences

Those interested in applicable and experiential learning on campus should look no further than the College of Natural Sciences, where laboratory courses and research opportunities abound. (The research isn't restricted to graduate studies, either—find ample chances to engage in undergraduate research while at SDState.) It's also a starting point for pre-professional health careers and pre-medical students.

College of Nursing

If bettering the lives of others is on your career agenda, SDState's College of Nursing is an excellent place to start. With alumni careers ranging from practicing nurses to healthcare educators to leadership at organizations nationwide, nursing majors enjoy a variety of program options to work toward a Bachelor's of Science in nursing—something more powerful than ever in a competitive job market. 

College of Pharmacy & Allied Health Professions

Whether you're interested in working as a pharmacist (or opening your own pharmacy) or the idea of clinical research at the cutting-edge of the field of medicine, the College of Pharmacy & Allied Health Professions provides a host of opportunities for career growth during each highly hands-on academic program. Fields of choice for alumni include ambulatory care, home health care and rural health.

Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering

Improving how the world around you functions is at the core of the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering. Departments and majors help students specialize in problem-solving and bettering how society operates at every level, from construction and civil engineering projects such as building bridges and infrastructure, to developing and coding necessary software. A multitude of research opportunities are available to undergraduate students, in addition to hands-on work experience right here in Brookings, even before graduation.
